Journée d’études, Biblissima+ Cluster 4

Monday 5 May (Auditorium de l'Humathèque) and Tuesday 6 May (salle 32, Centre de Colloques), Campus Condorcet

A clear need for researchers is a way of creating and managing image annotations that are not simply flat but that are structured to represent our deeper understanding of graphic communication. Specialists in palaeography, epigraphy, heraldry, numismatics, sigillography, art history and beyond have all found invaluable such a tool that allows them to create annotations that are modelled in a way that distinguishes between the visual, the material, and the semantic, at the level both of the sign and of its constituent parts. The earliest example of such a tool to our knowledge is Archetype, which was developed initially as part of the ERC project DigiPal, and which allowed researchers to structure their annotations, for instance by annotating the image of a letter with information such as its constituent elenets (ascenders, descenders and so on), and then to find other images of letters with the same elements. Although this software is now obsolete, a large number of researchers continue to use it or have developed their own ad hoc software based on the same model, for instance in four ERCs and an MSCA in six different countries. Thanks to the OPal project and Biblissima+, we are now in the process of renewing Archetype, and so we propose this meeting in the context of Biblissima+ Cluster 4 to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches and what we would want for the future.

Registration is free but required, because the number of places is limited. Participation is possible in presence or online; a link will be sent to registered participants on the morning of the conference. To register, please use the link in the left-hand menu.
